Pitfalls of temporomandibular joint management
Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders are very common in population. Their diagnosis and therapy often require interdisciplinary cooperation. Medical history remains a basic pillar of the terapeutical approach in every patient. In patients with temporomandibular disorders and bruxism, it is often complex and demanding. The crucial elements are time, complexity and completeness. The somatic examination is often underestimated, however, it provides very important and valuable data. Therapeutic plan must be designed in relation to the necessity of complex multimodal cooperation in the tretment of this disorder. It is necessary to create it in view of treatment goals in particular patient. Usually, the treatment is long-term. The plan could be optimal, compromised, minimal or acute only. During treatment planning, it is necessary to avoid biases which mostly arise from ignorance, misleading informations in professional literature or congnitive biases. Most of these disorders can be treated conservatively, these methods are but often underestimated or incorrectly applied. This lecture focuses on particular crucial aspects of care of the patient with temporomandibular disorders.
