Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being applied in various innovative ways within dentistry as of 2024. Here are some of the most notable applications: 

Diagnostic Assistance: AI tools are increasingly used to diagnose dental conditions. By analyzing dental images such as X-rays, AI can help accurately identify issues like cavities, periodontal disease, and even signs of oral cancers. These systems can offer second opinions to dentists and help in the early detection of diseases. 

Treatment Planning: AI assists in creating personalized treatment plans based on individual patient data. For orthodontics, AI can simulate tooth movements and predict orthodontic treatment outcomes, helping patients and dentists visualize the potential results before the treatment starts. Patient Management: AI-powered systems manage patient records and appointment scheduling more efficiently. These systems can predict no-shows or cancellations, optimize scheduling for efficiency, and even remind patients of upcoming appointments and follow-ups. 

Automated Patient Monitoring: In dental surgeries, AI is being explored for real-time patient monitoring, analyzing sensor data to ensure safety during procedures. For instance, AI can monitor vital signs and alert medical staff to anomalies that may indicate distress or complications. 

Enhanced Dental Imaging: AI enhances the interpretation of dental imaging by improving the clarity and detail of images through advanced image processing techniques. This not only aids in better diagnosis but also reduces the need for retakes of dental X-rays, reducing radiation exposure.

Robotic Dentistry: Though still in its early stages, AI-guided robotic systems are being developed for specific dental procedures, including implants and root canal treatments. These systems aim to increase precision and reduce the margin of error in complex procedures. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Training: AI is also integrated with VR and AR technologies to provide immersive training environments for dental students and professionals. These tools simulate real-life scenarios and procedures, offering hands-on experience without the associated risks. 

Teledentistry: Enhanced by AI, teledentistry has become more efficient, allowing for remote diagnosis and consultations. AI tools analyze patient-submitted images of their teeth and gums to provide preliminary assessments and recommendations before a remote consultation with a dentist. These advancements are making dental care more accessible, efficient, and personalized, aiming to improve patient outcomes and streamline dental practices.
